(CBS) - The man accused of attempting to blackmail television host David Letterman has pleaded guilty to second-degree larceny in a New York courtroom.
Former CBS news producer Robert "Joe" Halderman admitted he tried to extort two million dollars from the "Late Show" funnyman by threatening to release information on Letterman's love life.
As part of a plea deal, Halderman will receive six months in jail, five years probation, and a thousand hours of community service.
On his show Tuesday night, Letterman said the episode had made him "full of anxiety and nervous and worried."
He praised the Manhattan District Attorney's Office and New York Police Department for handling the situation "professionally, skillfully and appropriately."
