Summer family nutrition program serves hungry East Texans

Posted: Updated:

TYLER (KYTX) - Long lines of cars and trucks wrapped around the East Texas Food Bank Friday. The non-profit is distributing 46 pound boxes of food to needy East Texas families. CBS 19's Anthony Austin joins us from the East Texas Food Bank.

Since June, the East Texas Food Bank has been distributing these 46 pound boxes of food. It's all part of the summer family nutrition program targeting families who are struggling in this recession.

It all starts with a simple, brown box. Add baking mixes, soups, stews, and other food items, plus the muscle and guidance of dedicated volunteers, and you have the recipe of a new project that will feed many east Texas families this summer. "The needy, not the greedy, but the needy," said Antionette Temple.

Hundreds of families sat patiently in their vehicles waiting to receive these 46 pound boxes of food at the East Texas Food Bank.

After answering a few questions on a short application form at the entrance, Torra Green drove his pick-up truck around the Food Bank to pick up a box for his daughter and grandchildren. "It means a lot for kids who don't have food to eat."

In four years, the ETFB has grown 90 percent in the number of East Texans seeking emergency food assistance. Nearly half of the food bank's clients are children. "A lot of families here in East Texas are under stress from the economy," said Dennis Cullinane, the ETFB director.

That's why the summer family nutrition program was started: to give families a helping hand when they need it the most. "There are a lot of hungry people and a lot of them are very proud...but something like this, they can come and get it," said Temple.

Here are the qualifications for the summer food program:

-households with legal guardianship over at least one child under 18 years of age.
-an annual household income equal to or less than 185 percent of the federal poverty guideline -families who children receive free or reduced price lunch
-or those who receive WIC, or snap (food stamps)

The food distribution ended at 6:00 PM on Friday. The next distribution will take place in Longview. It will be held on Wednesday, August 25th at Maude Cobb Convention Center. Distribution times are from noon until 7:00 pm. For more information, click here:
