Community members gathered Thursday at Willow Brook Country Club as members of the Women's Fund announced this year's recipients of grants. Three new grantees will receive $94,816 to help develop or expand programs at each organization.

The Alzheimer's Alliance of Smith County was granted $40,000 to continue with an program that will increase education about Alzheimer's disease within the medical community. The program will provide a medical outreach coordinator to work with physicians and patients to provide access to resources, educational materials, support referrals, memory screening tools and staff training.

Azleway, Inc will receive $24,816. Executive Director Gary Duke said with 552 children under the organization's care, the funds are a much needed source to better prepare young boys for a life outside of the home. The money will be used to create a transitional program for teenage boys before leaving the home at 18.

The training will proactively prepare them with knowledge and skills on how to retain a job and to live independently in order to have successful, productive lives.

"We are really making a difference in kids' lives from around the state and for generations to come. We are so appreciative," Duke said.

The East Texas Food Bank currently has a school back pack program, which distributes food on Fridays to needy children for the weekend at Tyler ISD elementary schools.
