Port Arthur mayor believes jobless rate data skewed

Posted: Updated:

Port Arthur city leaders are frustrated with the 16.8% unemployment in their city, but they're also having a hard time with how a state agency came up with that number.

Mayor Deloris Bobbie Prince argues the numbers do not accurately reflect joblessness in Port Arthur, because the rate uses data from the 2000 census instead of numbers from the 2010 census.

The Texas Workforce Commission presented estimates at their regular meeting at the Carl Parker Center yesterday.

The entire Beaumont- Port Arthur area ranks number 3 on the state's list of cities with the highest unemployment.
