TXU, Path Join Forces to Help East Texans Survive Summer

When Shaniqua Darden showed up at PATH Thursday, she received more than a fan, she got some great news, too.  She's eligible for a payment plan through TXU Energy, which guarantees her service won't be disconnected if she misses a payment.

"That was my main concern about everything this summer was the electric bill," Darden said.  "I was scared to even get an air conditioner because of the electric bill being so high. But now I can get an air conditioner in my home."

Because of the recent high temperatures, TXU moved up the start date of its moratorium on summer disconnects.

"We have flexible payment terms, we've extended deposit requirements," said Mike Gutierrez of TXU Energy. "There will be no deposit for those customers who are low income, senior citizen, ill or disabled."

Dr. Richard Viken, Professor of Family Medicine at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Tyler, said for the elderly, heat like we're experiencing can be deadly.

"Air conditioning is extremely important," Dr. Viken said. "It is the only way that elderly people can keep themselves cool. Their bodies are not able to physically handle the challenge of a high temperature."

PATH has a utility bill assistance program and provides fans, free of charge.

Executive Director Christina Fulsom said her supply of fans is going fast, but thanks to help from TXU, PATH will be able to purchase a thousand more.

"If we can help pay people's bills, if TXU can let them pay their bill later in the year and if we can help cool their homes with a fan, then we'll be making a difference," Fulsom said.

A difference Shaniqua Darden, and her four kids, appreciate.
