Pine Tree ISD used its $7,000,000 bond passed in 2006 to build a new multi-purpose recreational facility. That's $7,000,000 at a time when family budgets are stretched, but school administration said it's worth every penny.

"We're excited it's finally finished," said Superintendent Lynn Whitaker.

An NBA-like scoreboard, fancy playback screen, and bleachers with seat backs. "We want to take care of our home side obviously," commented Whitaker.

Pine Tree High School's new gym is a shared facility. "It's not just going to be a school gymnasium, it's going to be a facility we hope the community will be able to utilize," Whitaker said.

The community helped build it. Bonds like the one that funded this gym are common in Longview.

Longview ISD is in the midst of spending its massive 2008 bond including eight new schools, renovations, and additions. Bond supporters say spending the money actually fuels the local economy.

"$267 million dollar bond - building project. It's going to benefit everybody," said John Ray.

Construction work means more jobs and new facilities mean more people will visit or move to the area.

Over at Pine Tree, the dust has settled on construction. Now the school is getting ready to repay the community for its contribution and offer a better recreational environment for the students.

Whitaker said "It's been a challenge trying to make it work with the limited facilities but now once this facility opens up, we'll be able to expand those opportunities for our kids."

Pine Tree's gym opens officially on Sunday. The school is hosting an open house from 3:00-4:00pm.
