An engaged couple who both work in the helping professions has come up with a unique challenge as part of their wedding - instead of wedding gifts, they are asking for blood donations.

Caitlin Campbell and fiance Lathan Pilcher met at Carter BloodCare's 50-gallon Challenge at Tyler Junior College in 2013. So when they decided to tie the knot, they adopted the 50-gallon theme and are inviting others to do what they were doing when they met, giving blood.

The Campbell/Pilcher 50-gallon Challenge is a "blood drive" that will be held at the Tyler Donor Center located at 815 South Baxter Avenue.

It runs from Sept. 19 to Oct. 30, 2017. The Tyler Donor center hours are:

  • Mon.-Thurs.: 11 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.
  • Tues., Wed., Fri.: 8:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.
  • Sat. 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
  • Closed Sunday

“Our blood drive is for all family, friends and anyone else in the community who would like to participate,” said Caitlin Campbell, the bride-to-be. “Just donate at the Tyler or Longview Carter BloodCare locations and mention our 50 Gallon Wedding Challenge. It means so much to us that folks would want to honor our love by saving lives.”

Donors coming to be part of the challenge just need to let the staff know they are giving for the 50-gallon Wedding Challenge or the 'wedding blood drive,' or the 'Campbell/Pilcher' wedding party. They can also use the sponsor code SPON105609.

Donations can be made in honor of the couple through October 30. For more information or to schedule an appointment time, contact Carter BloodCare at 903-363-0400.

Campbell and Pilcher are also inviting those who give for their 50-gallon Challenge to post a picture of their donation, with #50GallonWeddingChallenge on social media to show love and support.
