One person died while trying to help two others that were trapped in a collapsed hole on a city street in Joaquin Tuesday evening.
According to a report by the Shelby County Sheriff's office, deputies were called to East Saddle Street about several men trapped in a collapsed hole.
A contractor on scene explained that he and two city employees were working to clasp sewer pipes together when the east wall of the hole collapsed. The contractor was able to escape, but the city employees were still trapped.
A Good Samaritan tried to help by jumping inside the hole, but then the west side of the hole collapsed on top of him.
Emergency crews were able to rescue the two city workers, but the Good Samaritan, identified as 52-year-old Patrick Parks, did not survive.
Joaquin, Texas is located in Shelby County east of Nacogdoches County and south of Panola County.
