Annual Historic Spring U.S. Hi-Way 80 sale kicks off today

The ultimate flea market is back in East Texas and folks are looking for the best bargain

LONGVIEW — The Hi-Way 80 sale is usually a moment for Terri Richardson to take a nostalgic trip back to when she was a little kid. She expressed how she used to roam through her mother's personal belongings and play at her grandmother's house.

"Anything that's different, that's what I like," Richardson said.

The sale is one of her favorite events to check out, because there it doesn't appear to be a limit to what up for bargain. The Greggton Antique mall in Longview has unique collectables such as an Ace Frehley action figure or an illustrated Texas Dictionary.

"Jewelry and antique brushes, mirrors and combs that you can sit on your dresser," Richardson said.

For more than 25 years, the Hi-Way 80 sale stretched across five states. From Texas to Georgia. It was advertised as the "biggest garage sale in America". People like Shanna Faulkner and her friend Dana came traveled from Shreveport, Louisiana to find the best bargain. Her friend, Dana, bought a original washboard.

"Everyman's junk is another man's treasure," Faulkner chuckled. "It's just a rush. It's exciting."

Friday is usually considered to be the 'calm before the storm'. Crowds are usually bigger on the weekend. The sale runs through Sunday, the 22. The event is twice a year and the next one is in October.
