Breath of Life mobile asthma bus helping ETX kids

UT Health Science Center in Tyler has a mobile asthma bus offering free appointments to kids with asthma and allergies.

Pollen is in the air, and if you have allergies or asthma, you're already feeling the effects.

Flareups can be especially bad for kids at this time of year, and UT Health Science Center in Tyler is trying to help.

Their solution is the Breath of Life asthma bus, and their goal is to help kids who might not usually get treated.

They travel around East Texas to places like elementary schools and apartment complexes, and all of their services are free.

Misty Houston said they started the bus after two kids tragically died before they were able to get to their asthma appointments.

"There are lots of times when parents are not able to take off work, go to the school, grab their child, take them to their appointment, come back, it just takes too much time," Houston said. "But it's not so hard to just drop their kid off at school and go ahead and have that appointment while they're there."

Houston said East Texas is one of the worst places in the state for kids with asthma, second only to Houston.

The clinic does take appointments, but Houston said they'll never turn anyone away.
