It’s that time of year for giving back, especially to those in need.
For the 35th year, Brookshire’s, Super 1 Foods, and Fresh by Brookshire's are teaming up with local organizations to provide meals this holiday season.
"Last year we raised half a million pounds in food," said Jimmy Decker, manager of Fresh by Brookshire's. "This year, the goal is to provide a week's worth of food for 15,000 families."
Most of the families are in our community, but the help also stretches as far as Louisiana and Arkansas.
Giving back is easy... just grab a bag on your way out for $5 dollars, or ask your cashier to scan a $1 or $5 coupon.
All donations go towards programs like meals on wheels. Zoe Lawhorn says the donations make all the difference for families on the program.
"When you’re home bound, elderly, or disabled, it can really be difficult to get out and get to a store," said Lawhorn. "It may be impossible for you to get out and carry a heavy load and drive your car."
Recipients receive a box of non-perishable food items such as canned meat and vegetables, peanut butter, dried beans, rice and pasta, sugar and flour, along with a coupon for a free roasting hen.
"This is a way that we can supply these families with food that is really good, packaged well, and tasty," said Lawhorn. "Something that they can be proud of and enjoy."
The drive runs through December 21st.
