Sources confirm that Brookshire Grocery Company is laying off a number of people from its management division and will close its bakery in 30 to 90 days.

Brookshire's considered a sale last year worth an estimated $1 billion for its more than 150 stores in three states. Those included Brookshire's, Super 1 Foods and the FRESH by Brookshire's flagship store in Tyler.

That sale was ultimately "taken off the table," according to the company.

The bakery opened in 1995. It has 38 employees, and produces about 1.7 million products per year for Brookshire’s brands, including angel food, pound cakes, creme cakes, pudding cakes, half-sheet cakes, decorated and undecorated cakes, cornbread, icings, brownies, one-fourth-sheet cakes and layered cakes. That number does not include cupcakes made for outside customers.
