Deputies searching for suspect who impersonated police officer

Deputies are investigating and searching for a suspect who impersonated a police officer in Upshur County.

Deputies from the Upshur County Sheriff's Office are investigating after a man impersonated a police officer on Sunday near Diana.

According to authorities, a woman told deputies that a vehicle that she believed to be a police car tried to stop her in her vehicle by flashing his headlights repeatedly, so she pulled over.

The suspect, dressed in all black and wearing a gun, told the woman he pulled her over for acting suspiciously and asked the woman to search her car.

She refused and drove away after determining the situation was not legitimate.

The suspect did not chase her and she was not injured or attacked during the stop.

Deputies are asking anyone in Upshur County who has had a similar experience to call the Sheriff's Office.

Smith County and Tyler officials are coordinating with the Upshur County Sheriff's Office, as they have experienced recent similar cases.

The Upshur County Sheriff's Office would like to remind people that to stop for law enforcement, make sure that:

  • The law enforcement vehicle is clearly marked with the agency insignia
  • The law enforcement officer must be in uniform that shows the badge of office

Upshur County law enforcement officials use a combination of blue and red lights on their vehicles that regularly stop cars for traffic violations.
