An East Texas mother died trying to save her young son from drowning at a Louisiana lake on Sunday.

KTBS reports that 32-year-old Meagan Cato from Hemphill and her 8-year-old son were at a fishing dock at the Sabine River Authority park near the Pendleton Bridge. Cato jumped into the water, followed by her son, but then the boy started struggling, according to eyewitness statements.

Witnesses said Cato held her son above water until someone came to help, then she went under and did not resurface. Sabine Parish Deputy Coroner Ron Rivers was uncertain if Cato and her son were with other people or if others in the area came to help. Cato was under for only a short time before being pulled from the water.

Efforts to revive Cato continued until her arrival at Sabine Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead.

Rivers ruled her death as an accidental drowning and no autopsy was ordered. Neither Cato or her son were wearing a life vest.
