An East Texas soccer organization is collecting cleats for children in Costa Rica.

"Most of these kids are barefoot when they're playing. They just don't have anything. For most of these kids, it will be their first pair of soccer cleats," said Jeremey Bernard with FC Dallas East Texas.

He was looking for a new way for himself and his players to give back outside of East Texas. That's when he partnered with Center Point Ministries in Tyler and came up with "Cleats for Costa Rica".

"We are really trying to teach our kids on and off the field valuable life lessons," Bernard said. "It's important that kids learn to give back, and we think this is a great opportunity to give much bigger than East Texas."

It's the first year FC Dallas East Texas has collected cleats for a cause.

Bernard said his goal was to collect 100 pairs of cleats. He hit that goal in the first week. Two hundred pairs have been collected so far from the community, Tyler Junior College and UT Tyler.

"We’re looking for all cleats. Typically, kids outgrow cleats so fast, they look brand new," Bernard said.

The last pick up is Thursday, Sept. 28 at UT Tyler between 5:00 and 8:00 p.m. on the soccer field. Bernard will deliver the cleats to San Jose, Costa Rica next week.
