Whether East Texans would like to see if they meet the physical requirements to join the National Guard, or just want to try a new healthy snack, they will get their opportunity during this year’s Fit City Day in the Park.

A full slate of outdoor activities, along with 30-40 vendors who will be distributing information about local health and fitness resources, will be at Bergfeld Park from 8 a.m. to noon Sept. 30.

Fit City Tyler, a community wellness coalition that supports individuals, families and businesses in adopting healthy lifestyles, will host the event.

“Just being aware of our health is very important,” said Megan Riaz, member of the Fit City Tyler steering committee. “We want (people) to avoid some of the preventable diseases and be healthy now.”

Various games, vendor booths, fitness activities and more will be available at the park. Activities will range from a plank challenge to Zumba and other exercises. A representative from the National Guard is also expected to be present to give attendees the chance to see if they meet the physical requirements of joining the military.

There will be a section for children that will include, among other activities, a rock-climbing wall.

The Fit City Day in the Park was introduced in 2011 as an opportunity to make available health and wellness resources for the community after the Fit City coalition was formed in 2010.

“What makes it special is getting individuals, families, everybody in the community just to come out and have a fun day exercising and learning about new exercises,” said George Roberts, Northeast Texas Public Health District CEO. “We’ve always found these to be very, very successful events.

“We want people to come out, have fun, learn something new, and enjoy things to promote their own personal health,” he said.
