Gumbo is on the menu for the second annual East Texas Gumbo Cookoff in Hallsville. Chefs from across East Texas made their best gumbo to compete in the contest.

Event officials tell us they raised $3,000 to help improve Hallsville City Park. Judges picked their favorite of chicken and sausage and seafood gumbo.

Officials say the winners get bragging rights and know they have helped the community.

“All the proceeds go towards new park equipment,” Event coordinator Dan Herrington says. “Plus eating gumbo is a great way to spend a Saturday.”

Attendees also got the chance to pick their favorite gumbo with the people's choice award. A decision many people tell us was difficult.

Organizers are also proud to dedicate a volunteer built park stage for bands to play.
