After an ordinance was passed last month to get a grip on homelessness in Longview, police say they are delaying panhandling citations and working on educating homeless people on the new ordinance.
On September 28th, Longview City Council passed a solicitation free zone to reduce panhandling. Since then, Longview Police have not issued any citations for those breaking the law.
Police say they want to provide resources for help instead of handing out citations.
"We want to inform the public about the ordinance and help give resources to those in need," Longview Police Sgt. Shane McCarter says. "It's important to help rather than give a citation."
Longview Police say there is no timetable of when they will start giving out citations.
