One suspect was not so stealthy trying to steal tires from a car at a local restaurant Tuesday evening in Lufkin.

Assistant Chief David Thomas saw a suspect removing two remaining tires from a Jeep Cherokee as he was pulling into the Cafe Del Rio Restaurant around 7 p.m. Tuesday evening. Police had already taken a stolen tire report from the victim around 4:30 p.m. at the restaurant.

Thomas turned on his lights, announced his presence and directed the suspect, later identified as 37-year-old Tony Houston, to stop. Houston jumped into a Dodge Dakota and fled the scene.

Thomas, Chief Gerald Williamson (who was inside eating dinner) and other officers chased the suspect, reaching speeds of 80-90 mph through Wood Avenue to Lufkin Land, then onto Paul and Warren Streets.

Houston eventually led police to his house at 505 Bank Street, where he was taken into custody without incident. The other stolen tires were recovered at the house.

Houston was booked into the Angelina County Jail, and bond has not yet been set.

The story, however, does not end there...

The Special Services Unit along with Chief Gerald Williamson and Assistant Chief Thomas all helped put the tires back on the victim's car.
