Kids across the country participated in National Walk to School Day but for students who find themselves walking to class, sidewalks are essential.

“There are a lot of kids that walk home from school and there is not really a sidewalk for them to get on,” Mara Jose said.

J.T. Austin Elementary School is just one of many school around Tyler that do not have connecting sidewalks for students to use on their way to school

However, the city said it is in the process of adding more.

In statement Tuesday, the City said it had just wrapped up a sidewalk extension grant project that put several miles worth of sidewalks along Palace and Grade streets.

The City says building more pedestrian sidewalks has been and continues to be a priority.
