Multiple crews respond to early morning vehicle fire

Crews from multiple agencies responded to a vehicle fire that resulted in the total loss of an 18-wheeler's cab and damage to its front Sunday morning on 4110 S. First St.

Dispatchers from the Lufkin Police department were called several times calls around 7:15 a.m. regarding an 18-wheeler smoking at the intersection of South First Street and College Drive.

Greg Monroy, the 33-year-old driver from Kentucky, pulled into the back of the On the Road truck stop parking lot once he saw smoke entering the cab.

He was on his way to the Houston area from Kentucky at the time.

Monroy tried using his fire extinguisher to put out the blaze, but flames quickly spread through the cab.

Crews from the Lufkin Fire Department arrived on scene and put out the fire within minutes, but the cab was deemed a total loss.

According to authorities, the trailer had whiskey, wine and other spirits in it and suffered damage to its front.

Monroy was not injured.

City of Lufkin Fire Marshal Keith Cole said that it appears that the blaze was caused by an electrical issue.

An agent from the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission also responded to the scene.
