In times of contemplation... anger, sorrow, or my personal favorite... love. Self expression is vital to the human condition; even therapeutic.

So, today is National Poetry Day. It's the annual mass celebration of poetry and all things poetical.

Shakespeare, Shelley, Byron, Keats, Yeats... Now these guys knew how to turn a phrase. True wordsmiths. Masters of language, who held the power of prose in their mighty pens. In their day, they were the rock stars. And the women swooned.

To give a quick lesson on poetry... I'll resort to Google:

Poetry is defined as a literary work, in which special intensity is given to the expression of feelings and ideas by the use of distinctive style and rhythm.

But according to you... poetry is like a tomato, and clearly doesn't have to rhyme at all. Trust me. It really isn't necessary. In fact some of the greatest works of poetry don't rhyme. Don't even get me started on Haiku.

But I digress...

In other words... boiled down to it's essence. Poetry is about capturing a moment. Instagram for your brain, if you will. Expressing feelings with such visceral emotion that the reader is able to feel those feelings too.

In closing, whatever you're feeling... anxiety, sadness, love, hate. Grab a pen, pencil, paper, iPad. Anything. Write it down.

You may be a poet, and don't even know it.

One thing is for sure, you'll certainly feel better once you do.

And guys... trust me on this. Your lady friend will definitely take notice.
