The Palestine Police Department is investigating a case involving animal cruelty after being rescued from the balcony and adjacent roof of a condemned house yesterday.
After neighborhood residents noticed four dogs wandering the balcony of 217 W. Palestine Ave., they notified Palestine PD.
Officers arrived on the scene and attempted to locate the property owner and the dogs for several hours, but were not successful, at first.
An investigation revealed the dogs were using the balcony to escape high summer temperatures inside the condemned house and had no other way to leave the building.
Upon entry, officers found out that the dogs did not have access to a yard and were forced to live in the accumulated filth that had filled the residence.
The dogs were safely removed from the house and are now staying with the Anderson County Humane Society.
