The first day of school is week away but that didn’t stop local radio DJ Jimmy Olson from doing what he can to collect school supplies for kids in need.

According to the Kids in Need Foundation, more than 16 million kids live in poverty in the United States and arrive to school on the first day without needed supplies.

A local parent, Taylor Dyson, dropped off a backpack at the donation site on Saturday and said “it’s important to help people who don’t have money to afford school supplies.”

Donations can be made at Jimmy Olson’s donation site located in the parking lot of the Walmart located along Broadway and W. South Town Drive in Tyler.

Jimmy will be camping out overnight at the location until he collects 2,000 backpacks.
