A new soup kitchen hoping to curb hunger opened in Tyler Wednesday. The Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception's Society and St. Vincent de Paul partnered up to open the first soup kitchen offering lunch in Smith County.
The "Feed My Lambs" soup kitchen serves a hot meal to anyone in need of food on Wednesdays between 11:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. at the Cathedral Center at 410 South College.
"Sometimes there's things that you know you should've been doing all along, and it just all works out that you can start doing it," said Father Hank Lanik of the cathedral.
Father Lanik said with a kitchen built in to the church, it makes sense.
He said after a few meetings in the spring with St. Vincent de Paul volunteers, he could not wait to kick off the soup kitchen.
"We appreciate all these families and these people giving their time to do this . If it wasn't for them, we don't know where we would be," said Lorenzo Carrion, who has lived homeless in Tyler for one year.
He says he's prayed for a program to offer lunch in the area.
