The Tyler Fire Department was awarded a $1.58 million grant by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), and the next step was to get the city's approval to accept the grant.

The City of Tyler denied the grant due to insufficient funds.

The extensive budget cycle that just ended, which budgeted the sales tax to what it was in 2014-2015, limits what funding the city can do.

If approved, the grant would have covered bringing on 12 new firefighters, including their salaries and benefits, bringing the current staff from 156 to 168.

The first two years the grant would have covered 75 percent of the cost, followed by 35 percent of the total in the third year then leaving the city to cover the full benefits and salary the fourth year.

Justin Dominy, president of the Tyler Professional Fire Fighters Association, IAFF Local 883, says the TFD would like to thank the councilmen and woman who took time to look into the grant with them, and even though they couldn't make it happen, TFD will continue to step up and get what needs to be done.
