UPDATE: Quincy Butler, 44, was taken off life support Tuesday morning. He was found hanging in his cell on Nov. 8.

His body will be autopsied at the Southwestern Institute of Forensic Science in Dallas.

the Texas Rangers are conducting an independent investigation into this death.


A Smith County inmate is on life support at a Tyler hospital after being found hanging from a ligature by a detention officer on Nov. 8.

Officials say he is 44-year-old Quincy Butler of New Orleans.

The incident happened around 1:30 p.m. on Nov. 8. Officials called a code blue and administered CPR until EMS arrived and took over.

The inmate had been in jail since Nov. 2 on an aggravated assault charge and was segregated in a side cell due to being a danger to other inmates and being on suicide watch.

He was checked nine minutes prior to being found.

The Texas Commission on Jail Standards and Texas Rangers have been notified.
