October 10th has been given the title of world mental health day, a day to bring awareness to mental health diseases. Also, this day is used to teach people how to detect early signs of a mental health problem.

The World Health Organization says 1 out of 4 people will be affected by mental health illnesses.

"Mental illness exists throughout our society and the world, it's something that can be treated," Good Shepherd Medical Center's Dr. Ivan Pawlowicz says. "We have excellent treatment, medications, and therapies available for a wide variety of mental illnesses, just like we have a wide variety of treatments for physical illnesses."

Dr. Pawlowicz has several ways to help those with mental illnesses.
1. Encourage the person to see a doctor. Doctors can help them get the right medications and therapies for their illness.
2. Have a conversation not a debate. talk to the person in a manner that makes them comfortable.
3. Advise them to take their medications. many times they will not take them due to a stigma that says they are weak.
4. Seek support groups, talking it out among others can help bring strength.
Finally look into adopting a pet. This help them get their minds off of the problem and feel more comfortable.
