The Gustavo Zavala-Garcia murder trial, originally scheduled to start in October 2017, is now scheduled to start the first week of February, 2018.

The decision was reached Thursday morning during a pre-trial hearing after prosecutors and defense attorneys agreed on the new date.

During the pre-trial hearing prosecutors announced they are submitting multiple interviews with children as evidence. The children were described as witnesses.

The next pre-trial hearing is scheduled for October 5, 2017. Judge Jack Skeen Jr. expects to hear an update on the status of forensic evidence.

Zavala-Garcia is charged with capital murder in the killing of 10-year-old Kayla Gomez-Orozco. Her body was found in a well on Zavala-Garcia’s property in November of 2016.
