TITUS COUNTY, Texas — Authorities are investigating after a 74-year-old man drowned in an East Texas lake on Thursday.

According to the Mount Pleasant Police Department, officials were contacted around 8:30 p.m. concerning an unoccupied vehicle and boat trailer that were backed onto a boat ramp unoccupied. Police say a witness reported no one was around the vehicle and no boat was seen in the area.

Officers responded to Boat Ramp Park on Lake Tankersley and after determining who the owner of the vehicle was, his family members were contacted. The family reported the owner of the vehicle, identified as James Paul Majors, 74, of Mount Pleasant, was supposed to be fishing on the lake, but should have returned.

Mount Pleasant Fire Department Water Rescue responded and began searching the lake for Majors and his boat. Officials located Majors' vacant boat on the far side of the dam diagonal to the boat launch.

Texas Parks and Wildlife Game Wardens responded to the lake and utilizing side sonar, they were able to locate Majors body shortly before midnight.

TPWD is the primary investigating agency for the drowning that they believe was accidental.
