In an effort to prevent illegal use of prescription drugs in Smith County, the Smith County Sheriff’s Office announced plans to install public prescription drug drop boxes Wednesday June 5.

According to the press release, the Sheriff’s office worked in conjunction with the East Texas Substance Abuse Coalition. Welding students at Tyler ISD Career and Technology Center built the boxes with materials donated by local businesses.

The drop boxes are expected to decrease the likelihood of youth prescription drug abuse in particular, by offering a safe, year-round disposal option.

A ribbon cutting is scheduled for Friday, July 21, from 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. at the Smith County Sheriff’s Office downtown. Representatives from Hospice, local pharmacies and the healthcare sector will also attend.
