A grand jury indicted Smith County Commissioner JoAnn Hampton on Sept. 7 on a charge of injury to an elderly individual.

The charge stems from an alleged altercation on April 2, when a 72-year-old woman called the Smith County Sheriff's Office to report Hampton pushed her at church.

According to an arrest affidavit, the woman said Hampton stormed into the office like a "raging bull" and began screaming at her.

The woman said Hampton pushed her down causing her to fall against a chair and injure her wrist. The victim was treated and released from a local hospital emergency room.

The pastor told an investigator with the Smith County Sheriff's Office that the argument was over "dressing" the church's communion table.

If Hampton is convicted, she would be removed from office bast on Texas' Local Government Code.

Van Zandt elected District Attorney Chris Martin is serving as the special prosecutor in Smith County for this case.
