Winnsboro receives 'National Accredited Main Street' designation

Winnsboro was one of 68 cities nominated by The Texas Historical Commission in early March 2018.

WINNSBORO, Texas — Winnsboro, Texas has made the list as a Nationally Accredited Main Street, according to Brenda Buck, Main Street Program Director with the City of Winnsboro.

    The city was nominated by the Texas Historical Commission early in March and the decision announced during the Main Street Now conference held March 26-28.

    “The state recognition and national accreditation recognizes the hard work of these local programs, and the value placed on their historic downtowns,” said Debra Drescher, Texas Main Street Program state coordinator.

    Selection criteria focused on:

    • Planning
    • Partnerships
    • Staffing
    • Volunteer efforts
    • Preservation ethic
    • Training
    • Program assessment

    The Texas Main Street Program (TMSP) began in 1981 as one of the first state coordinating programs in the country. Local Main Street programs focus on responsibly utilizing a community’s historic assets for economic benefit and increased quality of life. During 2017, approximately $500 million was reinvested into Texas’ 89 Main Street districts. Additionally, 388 small businesses and 2,329 jobs were created.

    Winnsboro joins several other cities around East Texas that have achieved this designation, including:

    • Tyler
    • Gladewater
    • Longview
    • Kilgore
    • Lufkin
    • Nacogdoches
    • Palestine
