CARTHAGE AND GILMER - There are a lot of good high school football teams in East Texas, but when you talk about the best of the best, two teams jump to the top of the list.

The Carthage Bulldogs and the Gilmer Buckeyes.

Over the last 10 years, each team has won multiple state titles (Carthage - 5, Gilmer - 2) and both are in contention almost every season.

They've met on the field 6 times in the last decade, with each team winning 3 teams. In 2016, Carthage ended Gilmer's long regular season winning streak with a 55-37 win.

Gilmer offensive coordinator Alan Metzel says, "We have a great respect for them as a team and a staff...we have to play hard to win, for us anytime we're playing a good opponent we want to raise our game."

Carthage head coach Scott Surratt adds, "I think at both programs, we don't seek revenge, we want to win the next game...we play football on the field and both programs work extremely hard and it's going to be a good contest."

This year's game will be Saturday at 7:00 PM at Jeff Traylor Stadium in Gilmer. Tickets are officially sold out, but we'll have highlights Saturday night on CBS 19 news at 10.
