NEW LONDON - The West Rusk football team is off to one of their best starts in recent history. Already 5-0, and dominating on both sides of the ball, the Raiders are poised for a deep playoff run.
Some of that success can be attributed to returning six starters on offense and defense. “We knew going into this year, we were going to be pretty experienced,” Coach John Frazier stated, “We didn’t have very many graduate last year. It was just a matter of getting out here and start getting their reps.”
Through five games this season, the Raiders are averaging 45 points a game. Senior wide receiver Dylan Walker believes the offensive success is the result of a collaborative effort. “Our lineman are a key factor, our running back and quarterback are pretty good,” Walker explained, “Just everyone is stepping up.”
Defensively, West Rusk is excelling as well. They’re holding their opponents to an average of six points a game. “We click, we have chemistry, so we all know what to do,” said senior defensive end Darrien Johnson.
Despite starting the season undefeated, the Raiders realize things can become challenging as they get deep into district play. “This district is full of a lot of great coaching staffs, a lot of great talent, and a lot of tradition,” Frazier stated.
Next up for the Raiders is a rivalry game against district opponent Arp on Friday.
