DPS released the identity of the driver killed in an early-morning wreck on I-20 involving a tractor-trailer and a passenger car.

According to a preliminary crash report, a Mazda driven by 77-year-old Amando Vega tried to pass a tractor-trailer from the improved shoulder eastbound on I-20. The truck struck the Mazda, causing the Mazda to impact the guard rail and then rebound back into the outside lane and become trapped between the truck and its towed semi-trailer.

The Mazda and the trucks towed trailer caught fire and they came to rest on the improved shoulder facing eastbound.

Vega was pronounced dead at the scene.

The tractor-trailer driver, 62-year-old Melvin Edwards, was taken to a local hospital, treated and released.
