DeSantis to Hurricane Ian evacuees: 'Don't leave your pets behind'

The Florida governor said Tuesday that almost every shelter across the state will be pet-friendly.

TAMPA, Fla. — As Floridians are evacuating ahead of the arrival of Hurricane Ian, the state urged them Tuesday evening to be mindful of keeping their pets safe, too.

That includes even bringing them to a shelter if you need to, according to Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis.

The governor said in a press conference, "Don't leave your pets behind."

"Almost every shelter is gonna be pet-friendly," DeSantis added. "People understand that it is important, and it is important that we're taking care of our pets."

The governor directed residents to the Florida Division of Emergency Management's website for pet preparation. It outlines steps you should take for everything from your dogs and cats to service animals and livestock.

The state website advises:

If you evacuate your home, DO NOT LEAVE YOUR PETS OR ANIMALS BEHIND. It is unlikely for pets or larger animals to survive on their own. If by some chance they do, you may not be able to find them when you return. Prepare now and protect your family and pets before the next disaster strikes.
