90 Day Challenge Week 7: Gillian's Update

We just wrapped up week 7 of our 90 Day Fitness Challenge at XTC Fitness & Sports with Tony Cruz. Justin and I are still progressing in our workouts. I can't say they have gotten easier, because they haven't, but we do seem to have more stamina than we started with.

Although I am sticking to the physical and nutritional plan, I have had a hard time budging the numbers on the scale this week. I'm still hovering around that 10 to 12 pound weight loss with more to go. I know I am starting to add some lean muscle because my clothes fit better. I would like to blame the static number on the scale to the myth that muscle weighs more than fat. However trainers say "it's not true!" A pound of muscle and a pound of fat weigh the same, but they do differ in density. This means if you look at five pounds of muscle and five pounds of fat side by side, the fat takes up more space than the muscle. Again, you'll see the difference in how your clothes fit. In addition, because a pound of muscle burns more fat than a pound of fat, even at rest, by increasing your lean muscle tissue mass, you're helping your body burn more calories. I'll keep plugging along.

Tony has encouraged Justin and I to supplement our 3 weekly workouts with him by taking some of the classes at XTC. This week I tried two new classes; Booty Blast and Spinerval. The first one is probably self explanatory as to what area of the body was worked, but the second one was an overall body workout. It started with a spin class, then moved to another area of the gym where we ran stairs, jumped rope, worked abs and ran laps on the track. Running continues to be a big challenge for me, but I really did enjoy the class- as strange as that sounds.

Let's Cook owner Kyna Clendenin gave us a few new things to try this week, and they were delicious! They included a chicken wrap, apples and peanut butter (it was some type of natural peanut butter but not sure exactly which one) and some all natural trail mix. I took the trail mix and added some Greek yogurt and it was great for breakfast or a nutritious snack.

Justin and I have 5 weeks left of our transformation and we are just as committed now as when we started. You can also keep up with our progress by clicking on the Fit City link on our homepage and watch Dana Hughey's stories.
