What to Know About School Scoliosis Screening; Golden Apple Educator

By Meghan McDermott

Scoliosis testing is part of annual medical screenings done at school. Scoliosis it's a spine condition, that if caught early enough, is reversible.

"By screening in schools you pick up most of kids in the age group that are likely to get scoliosis.," Dr. Todd Raabe Orthopedic Spine Surgeon with Azalea Orthopedics.

Dr. Raabe says scoliosis is a curve of the spine that exceeds at least ten degrees.

"On this you see a straight spine. If this is bent forward it would be very flat, but with a spine that develops scoliosis it starts to rotate like this," said Dr. Raabe.

Dr. Raabe says the spine condition is most common in girls. It can be treated two ways: either through wearing a brace or having surgery. But the doctor points out that not every diagnosis requires the above remedies.

"A vast number of those don't require any form of repair or treatment what-so-ever. We look at them and monitor them until we're sure they're not gonna be big enough to require anything else," said Raabe.

He says children are typically tested for scoliosis in 6th and 9th grades.

It was a standing ovation today from fellow teachers at the St. Louis School in Tyler as Jenny Montalvo was honored for her hard work in the classroom.

Montalvo was named Region Seven Elementary Teacher of the Year. For 17 years she's worked in special education. This will be her fifth at St. Louis.

"I love the challenge of new students coming in and never knowing what their talents are going to be, what their needs are going to be. You're constantly a life-long learner, learning about what this disability is and how to help serve this child," said Jenny Montalvo, special education teacher at the St. Louis School in Tyler.

CBS 19 is proud to name Jenny Montalvo as this week's Golden Apple Educator.
