Winnsboro will bring dozens of artists to town this week in its first major event since becoming one of the first State Designated Cultural Arts District sites.
The Winnsboro Fine Art Market will take place from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Nov. 8. Artists will be set up in booths on Market and Elm streets, organizers said. Admission is free.
The juried show drew artists from throughout the region, said Mary Smith, chairwoman of the event.
"I'm overwhelmed by the number and quality artists who are participating in this first year festival," she said in a prepared statement.
The Art Market also will include live music from a stage set up at the train depot, children's activities and an exhibition of student art.
It is sponsored by the Winnsboro Main Street Partnership.
Earlier this year, the Texas Commission on the Arts named Winnsboro a Cultural Arts District after evaluating applications for the new designation.
Winnsboro and six other sites, all located in much larger cities, received the designation, which recognizes districts that contribute to the culture and fine arts of the state.
Dr. Gary Gibbs, executive director of the Texas Commission on the Arts, is scheduled to formally present the designation Friday night during the market's Patrons' Reception, organizers said.
The City Council has appointed an Arts District coordinator to the Arts District Council to promote and develop music, visual and performing art activities, according to information from Ms. Smith.
