18-wheeler hits van near Gilmer

Posted: Updated:

GILMER (KYTX) - An eighteen-wheeler and a van collided today, about four miles south of Gilmer on Highway 271, just north of Eagle Drive.

Upshur County authorities and DPS responded to the accident. The van was carrying four children and two adults. The eighteen-wheeler flipped in the course of the accident and blocked portions of the roadway. The driver of the eighteen-wheeler was trapped in the cab of the truck, and crews worked for more than hour to free him. He was then airlifted to ETMC in Tyler.

At least six people were transported from the scene by East Texas Medical Center ambulances, according to ETMC spokesperson Rebecca Berkley.

Traffic is somewhat delayed in both directions.

The truck also hit a electricity pole. That pole has been removed from the roadway.

We will bring you more details as they become available.
