At a press conference Tuesday in Mount Enterprise, the leader of the New Black Panther Party, an African-American activist from Houston named Quanell X, announced there will be a march and a rally in Henderson on December 22 in response to the death of Gerald Johnson, 31, of Mount Enterprise.
Johnson, of Mount Enterprise, was found unresponsive on his cell floor in the Rusk County Jail on October 16, possibly due to a seizure. His family disputes this version of events.
The New Black Panther Party is identified by the Southern Poverty Law Center as a 'black seperatist hate group'. Those gathered at the press conference said they plan for the march to be peaceful, and want it to draw attention to the treatment of African-Americans in the Rusk County Jail.
