TYLER (KYTX) - More than a thousand people packed the Salvation Army in Tyler to enjoy a warm Thanksgiving meal, and give thanks. CBS 19 Anthony Austin was there as spirits were lifted.

Songs of joy mixed with the aroma of turkey and dressing created an atmosphere of Thanksgiving at the Salvation Army in Tyler.

"I have so much to be thankful for."

It's a meal that not only filled John Sim's stomach, but also his heart.

"Since I'm a single person by myself, I come out here every Thanksgiving, you'll see me again on Christmas," said Sims.

It takes a special group of volunteers to make the Salvation Army's annual Thanksgiving meal happen each year.

"They thank me and sometimes they ask for more food."

More than 250 people decided to not only serve their family this turkey day, but their neighbors in need as well.

"They're the ones serving, they're the ones bussing tables."

Captain Zach Bell says more than one thousand people had a turkey meal with all the trimmings by noon. He expects more than 1,500 people to be fed by the end of the day.

"For so many, they don't have that opportunity, so they come to us so grateful," said Bell.

Jeff Reyais's family held hands in prayer, thankful that the Salvation Army has provided a place for him to stay.

"Have them being able to come and see me is a blessing."

"We just praise God for this place that he can come and try to get help."

As another Thanksgiving comes to an end, just remember:

"We truly do have alot to be thankful for."

"I'm thankful for every day. Every day is a good day."

"This is what Thanksgiving is all about."

Here are some interesting facts...it took 850 gallons of stuffing and gravy, two thousand pounds of potatoes, eighty cans of green beans, three thousand rolls, two hundred turkeys and 250 pies to feed everyone today.

The Salvation Army is already planning for their Christmas dinner. They urge East Texans to contribute their time or donations to help others who are less fortunate this holiday season.
