NACOGDOCHES (Tyler Morning Telegraph) — An inmate intent on escaping from jail on Christmas day allegedly stabbed one of the Nacogdoches County Sheriff's jailers in the forehead with a ballpoint pen.
Sheriff Thomas Kerss said the incident happened Christmas evening when Lesedric McClain, 21, attempted to escape.
"Inmate McClain used a ballpoint pen to stab a jailer in the forehead in an attempt to flee his cell area. A portion of the pen broke off and lodged in the jailer's brow just above the right eye," he said.
Kerss said the inmate then fought with two additional detention officers as they attempted to subdue the man.
"The inmate was secured after a brief struggle and was placed into a violence cell. Although the inmate had verbally indicated his intent to escape during the assault, at no time was he close to exiting the confines of the jail," he said.
Kerss said the jailer who was stabbed was transported to Memorial Hospital where he was treated for his injuries and later released. He has not returned to work at this time.
Kerss said McClain was originally arrested after he attempted to take a weapon from a Nacogdoches Police Officer.
He remains jailed on the following charges; attempting to take weapon from officer, resisting arrest, evading arrest, aggravated assault on a public servant, two counts of assault on a public servant and attempted escape. His bonds total $195,000.
