Student brings BB gun to Kilgore school

(KYTX) LONGVIEW - A safety concern at an East Texas school, after an elementary student brings a BB gun to school. CBS 19's ShaVonne Herndon explains how staff members found the gun, and what consequences the student is facing.

A fourth grader clearly made a mistake when he brought a BB gun to school Thursday morning.

"It was an unloaded, nonfunctional BB gun that he was just showing off to friends," said Bobby Wheeley.

Although the gun wasn't loaded, Wheeley, with Kilgore ISD, says it is still a weapon even if it doesn't work.

"It was reported to our office immediately. The administrative staff at the intermediate school went to the student seized the gun, brought the student to the office, and called the parent."

Tangy Cooks, who asked us not to show her face, holds up the letter that was sent home to parents. Cooks says she wanted to know a bit sooner.

"They should have posted it on the KISD website, Facebook, or anything, because I have the notification to my phone - so we would have known."

Once she caught wind of what happened, Cooks immediately pulled her children out of school.

"The BB gun that the 4th grader brought it was non-functional, but the parents don't know that."

Meanwhile district leaders continue to look out for their student's safety.

"At no time do we feel like anyone was ever in danger. He didn't have any kind of vendetta against anybody he wasn't trying to threaten anyone," said Wheeley.

The child will be placed in Kilgore ISD's alternative school for the rest of the school year once his suspension is served.
