TYLER (KYTX) - More hungry East Texans in need will be able to fill their plates with fresh foods.

CBS 19's Hayley Wielgus explains how Brookshire's and the East Texas Food Bank are teaming up to provide an extra half-million meals to hungry East Texans.

Food that starts off on a shelf at Brookshire's ends up in Nealie Love's cart at the St. Mary Magdalene Food Pantry, an agency served by the East Texas Food Bank. The products got there through a partnership between the Food Bank and Brookshire Grocery Company.

"Items that are going out of date but are still very good quality are donated to the East Texas Food Bank. They come to our store pick up the product and make sure it gets to the needy people," said Rick Rayford, President and CEO of Brookshire Grocery Company.

"I appreciate it very much because it's very good and very healthy to have fresh fruit and vegetables as well as bread because when you go into grocery stores, it's quite expensive," said Love.

Seven Tyler-area Brookshire's stores have been participating in the Food Bank's 'Store Donation Program' for the past year and a half.

Now 39 additional stores in the East Texas area will be donating nutritious foods such as meat, bread and, fruits and vegetables.

"It's going to allow us to tap into 700 thousand pounds of additional donated food that we can distribute to agencies in East Texas," said Dennis Cullinane, the Executive Director of the East Texas Food Bank.

Like the St. Mary Magdalene Food Pantry, where demand was up 30% last month.

"Additional items would be fantastic, it would help our pantry, it would help our guests," said Tracy McAllister, coordinator at St. Mary Magdalene Food Pantry.

"With Brookshires donating more, people will be able to get more," said Love.

The program will help ensure Love and other clients will leave with a basket full of healthy foods.

Since October 2008, nearly 135 thousand pounds of food have been donated to the ETFB by Brookshire Grocery Company.
