TYLER (KYTX) - Tyler's Glass Recreation Center has seen a spike in membership. More people are walking through the door and checking in to get fit for less. Whether they're filling classrooms for Tai Chi, taking to the net, or pumping iron. Debbie Isham, special events and recreation manager for the city of Tyler, says they've seen hundreds of new members this summer.

More than 200 people have walked into the rec center for a deal on membership less than fifteen dollars a year. Isham says the reason behind the increase is a bad economy, and more classes offered by the center.

"We know the economy affected a lot of people's pocketbooks, but they still want to be able to stay in shape, they still want to do family things. Things to do and programs provided are low cost or no cost for them," said Isham.

Isham says in the last year they've seen growth in programs from ceramics to aerobics, and hopes to continue to add to the list in the future. She also says membership costs are low, but there are some additional costs for some classes.

So, whether you're looking to save some cash or just get in shape, the city says this is the place to get to know your community.

Tyler's Parks and Recreation department is looking for donations of used, commercial grade exercise equipment for Glass Recreation Center.
