TYLER — The dangerous S-curve on Grande Avenue near Old Jacksonville Highway is getting an upgrade.
The City of Tyler Street Department installed temporary delineators Wednesday morning to improve traffic safety at this high-traffic area.
The delineators are designed to help motorists identify and slow down as they move through the curve.
People have died and property damaged in the past few years as drivers try to negotiate the S-curve, so the city is working to help improve safety on that section of roadway.
CBS19 spoke with City of Tyler traffic engineer Peter Eng after the most recent death in January 2018. He stated that while a barrier is not completely off the table, engineers must consider other factors.
"A barrier could prevent the crossover type accidents but also introduces other type of accidents because if you hit the barrier it will bounce off and could create secondary accidents in secondary locations," said Eng.
He also said city traffic engineers have found other ways to improve road conditions in that section of Grande Boulevard. Most recently, the city textured the pavement on the S-curve to increase traction.
According to the city, the final solution will be the construction of a raised median with a guard rail.
