ALBANY - New York Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand called on President Trump to resign Monday amid numerous allegations of sexual harassment that surfaced during the 2016 presidential campaign.

Gillibrand called the allegations against Trump "credible" and "numerous" during an appearance on CNN, questioning why Congress hasn't held hearings to examine the Republican's behavior.

She urged Trump to step down from the presidency "immediately," joining Sens. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., and Cory Booker, D-N.J., in calling for Trump's resignation.

"I've heard these women's testimony, and many of them are heartbreaking," Gillibrand, a Democrat, said on CNN's Amanpour. "And President Trump should resign his position."

Three women who accused Trump of sexual harassment or assault held a joint news conference Monday.

They called for a congressional investigation into the accusations against Trump, making their call following a week when House members from both parties announced they would resign amid harassment allegations.

The White House issued a statement dismissing the allegations as "false claims" that were "totally disputed" in most cases by eyewitnesses.

"The timing and absurdity of these false claims speaks volumes," according to the White House statement, which claimed the American people "voiced their judgment" on Election Day last year.

On CNN, Gillibrand said Congress should intervene if Trump doesn't step down.

"I think he should immediately resign and if he doesn't we should have the investigation," she said.
Gillibrand last month said President Bill Clinton should have resigned after the Monica Lewinsky scandal during his presidency, and last week she said Sen. Al Franken should step down amid sexual harassment allegations -- which he ultimately did.
