Caleb Taylor Studying A Playbook To Save Lives

Part 2 of our "Going Pro" series takes us to ETBU where we meet a football players who's working on becoming a nurse.

MARSHALL, Texas - Caleb Taylor is a beast on the football field, however he shows a much gentler side in the classroom. The 6’1 220 pound linebacker is not only an all-conference football player, but he's a nursing major as well.

He decided to get into nursing because of his mother. While thinking about a career, Caleb stated “I talked to my mother a lot about it and she was encouraging. She was 40 when she went back to school to get her nursing degree. Maybe I can follow in her footsteps.”

Caleb draws his motivation to manage both nursing and football from the naysayers. He says, “I’ve had a lot of people tell me I couldn’t do it and that drives me forward to show that I can get this done and I can do it. Maybe it will inspire other football players to choose a little bit stronger major.”

As a nursing major, Caleb is often the only male in his classes, and that makes for an interesting experience. “I thought it was going to be pretty cool at first but all the women started talking about wedding dresses. It made me look forward to practice more,” he explained, “None of the girls know what you’re talking about when it comes to football.”

However he realizes without the support of his female counterparts, he would likely fall behind in his classes. “The girls help me out a lot and keep me on track. I have a really good study group that helps me stay on track with nursing,” Taylor explained.

Caleb hopes to make it to the NFL one day, but he has a pretty solid backup plan. “I am going to be the best RN I can and eventually go back and be a CRNA. They make big bucks too. That’s the ultimate goal if football doesn’t work out.” Regardless of which career path he chooses, Caleb has a bright future ahead.
